Peter Menzel/ASA / ASA, Ido.meb.237.xsIn the Asmat, a wooden bowl holds a collection of freshly harvested sago grubs (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus, the larvae of Capricorn beetles), extracted from the interior of a sago palm, Komor village, Irian Jaya, Indonesia. The Asmat is the worlds largest (and hottest), swamp. When roasted on a spit, they are fatty and bacon-flavored, although the skins are rather chewy. Image from the book project Man Eating Bugs: The Art and Science of Eating Insects by Peter Menzel and Faith DAluisio (Material World Books / Ten Speed Press). Before fast food, farms, or even wild game, insects fed prehistoric hunter-gatherers all over the world. Man Eating Bugs is a quest to learn about food preferences from native people in 13 countries who still eat insects.

Tim Matsui, Oahn (fatty), a homeless street kid, eyes a young girl begging late at night on the streets of Chiang Mai in the red light district; her mother, with baby, is across the street also begging. Members of the Volunteer for Childrens Development Foundation (VGCD) work the streets near the sex worker bars, talking with young prostitutes and street children about the opportunities their organization offer such as counseling, life skills training, emergency assistance, and temporary shelter. Many of VGCDs volunteers have been or still are sex workers who, while working, will watch for sexual and commercial exploitation of minors. According to VGCD members, children are often sent to beg or sell flowers to tourists in the bars; exposure to a highly sexualize atmosphere until the early hours of the morning puts the children at risk for exploitation and many wind up working in the sex industry either as juveniles or later as adults.
